Kara Schommer is a Portland native, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in early childhood and elementary education, as well as a Master’s degree in education and a reading endorsement all from the University of Portland. Kara has been a credentialed classroom teacher and learning specialist over the last twelve years, working with students in kindergarten through eighth grade. One of her biggest passions is teaching reading. This led her to receive her training and certification in Orton-Gillingham, a structured literacy approach. As a classroom teacher and learning specialist, she has seen first hand the tremendous amount of growth students can make in their reading through the multisensory approach of Orton-Gillingham.
In 2022, Kara started coursework with the Making Math Real Institute. Making Math Real is a multisensory and structured methodology that provides students with comprehensive knowledge of mathematical concepts. Through Making Math Real based strategies and methods, Kara helps students strengthen their knowledge of mathematical concepts by supporting their working memory and executive functioning development.
Currently, Kara works part time as a math learning specialist in a private school. She is also an Orton-Gillingham and math practitioner, specializing in individualized sessions to meet the specific learning needs of students. She consults and works closely with parents, teachers, and other learning specialists to make sure the unique learning needs of her students are being met.
In her free time, Kara enjoys spending time with her husband, Anthony, as well as family and friends. Outside of work, her hobbies include running, exploring new coffee shops, music, traveling, home decor decorating, baking, and reading.
